I don’t know about you, but I always love making my home cosy for Christmas. From extra blankets to sparkly lights and natural decorations, there is quite a lot you can do to achieve that cosy feeling in your home for the festive period.

I’ve previously talked about how I keep warm without cranking up the heating, but this is more about evoking feelings of warmth and happiness. When it’s cold outside, it’s fabulous to spend time indoors feeling cosy.

Get your decorations up!

I know some of us have been feeling a bit down this year, with the continued pandemic and as I type, yet another Boris announcement. But, don’t let that get you down. Putting up the decorations is a sure fire way to get that cosy for Christmas feeling. Plus, it’s a fantastic way to get the family together.

Pop on some Christmas tunes, don your festive sweater and go to town on the tree!

Create a cosy corner

Create a cosy corner in your living room or bedroom to instantly add a feeling of cosiness. Adding layers and textures to a room will automatically add a feeling of warmth. From curtains, throws or cushions there are endless possibilities to layers and they don’t need to be complicated. *Snug Company has a great range of cushions, curtains and bedspreads to add layers of warmth to your home. There is even a range of fabrics if you’re brave and want to make your own!

Play with colours, textures and patterns – go bold, it’s Christmas!

Candles and Lighting

Christmas candles
A scented candle will instantly invoke feelings of warmth and comfort

This kind of goes without saying, but when you are looking to create a cosy for Christmas atmosphere, winter scented candles are an absolute must! Candles that remind me of winter are my favourite, particularly pine scents. If you don’t have a real Christmas tree (like me) then you won’t get that authentic Christmas smell. However, you can create it using candles.

Candles also offer a soft glow warmth, which you can of course recreate using fairy lights and garlands. As it’s the festive season you can legitimately decorate your space with fairy lights. In fact, I have fairy lights in the bedroom all year round as I just love that soft glowy feeling!

The great thing about fairy lights is that you can get battery operated ones that work great for areas you wouldn’t ordinarily have lighting or plug sockets.

Create a feature of the fireplace

If like me, you’re lucky to have a fireplace or woodburner then you absolutely need to make a feature of this. Admittedly, mine at the moment is blocked off so that Nessi the cat doesn’t escape up the chimney. But, if you don’t have this problem, you can really make a standout feature by decorating your fireplace with garlands and stockings.

I get serious insta-envy over some of the fireplaces I see. Often, it’s go big or don’t bother! Fantastic creativity!

Bring nature in

This follows on quite nicely from other points in this post. Whether it’s a real Christmas tree or using natural foilage to decorate your fireplace or Christmas table. Bringing nature in is a fantastic way to create a cosy for Christmas feeling.

Not only does it look great, but it will smell great too – think cinnamon or orange, pine and berries! Working again with different textures like pine cones, eucalyptus, pine or holly cuttings, there is no end to what can be used. Of course, consider the toxicity of any cuttings if you have nibbly pets (or children)! And yes, I have found little regurgitated parcels of tinsel thanks to Nessi eating the decorations!

My favourite natural elements are my dried fruit decorations, thanks to my mum’s dehumidifying phase from a couple of years ago! (Just makes me think of Eddie from Friends “I’m a Dehumidifying maniac” hahaha

Create a Christmas table

Around this time of year, I love to start thinking about creating my Christmas table and I’m very excited to debut some Christmas plates this year!

However, my dining table is currently being used for ironing and I’m not confident the cat won’t knock everything off, so the table will be set Christmas Eve. If you don’t have these issues, then getting creative with your Christmas table will definitely make things feel festive and cosy.

Do you have Christmas place settings?

Using pointers from above, use natural elements, candles, fairy lights and lovely crockery to really make your festive table pop. You can be minimalist or maximalist with it, it doesn’t matter. Just leave room for your Christmas feast centrepiece, whatever that may be!

How do you add cosy feelings to your home at Christmas?

My favourites are definitely bringing nature in. What about you?

Peace out!
