A good night’s sleep is crucial for our overall well-being, and one of the most important factors influencing the quality of your rest is the mattress you sleep on. Whether you’ve been tossing and turning lately, waking up with back pain, or simply suspect that your mattress has seen better days, it might be time for an upgrade. But how do you know when it’s time to replace your mattress, and what benefits can you expect from a fresh new one?
I experienced all of the above recently, so when I was approached by Origin Mattresses asking if I’d like to try out the Origin Hybrid Mattress and Origin Storage Bed Frame I couldn’t refuse. Knowing my mattress was last replaced in 2007 (eek!) and that my bedroom furniture hadn’t had an update since I moved into my first flat in 2002…yep that long folks!
Why should you replace your mattress?
Mattresses aren’t designed to last forever. Over time, they naturally begin to lose their comfort and support. Here are the main benefits of replacing your mattress when it’s time:
1. Improved sleep quality
Your mattress is your bed’s foundation, and its job is to provide adequate support for your body while you sleep. As mattresses age, they lose their ability to conform to your body shape and properly support the spine, leading to discomfort and restless sleep. An old, sagging mattress may cause pressure points and misalignment of the spine, resulting in frequent waking, tossing, and turning.
A new mattress will provide better support, promoting more restful and uninterrupted sleep.

2. Reduction in aches and pains
Waking up with stiffness, back pain, or a sore neck is a clear sign that your mattress isn’t supporting you properly and until I got my new Origin Hybrid Mattress, thought my aches and pains were a sign I was getting older…! A few nights on the new mattress however, and I quickly realised that was not the case.
As your mattress ages, its materials degrade, causing uneven pressure distribution on your body. This can lead to discomfort, particularly in the back, hips, shoulders, and neck. A new mattress will alleviate these problems by offering better support and alignment for your body.
3. Allergy relief
Old mattresses can become a haven for dust mites, allergens, and bacteria, which can exacerbate allergies or respiratory issues – I mean, ew!
If you’ve noticed an increase in sneezing, coughing, or other allergy symptoms, it may be due to an accumulation of dust and allergens in your mattress. Replacing your mattress with a new one helps reduce exposure to these irritants, promoting a healthier sleep environment.
4. Better sleep hygiene
As a mattress ages, it may develop stains, smells, and other signs of wear that can affect your sleep environment. A new mattress will not only provide improved comfort, but it also creates a cleaner, more inviting space for rest. Keeping your bedroom a place of cleanliness and relaxation is essential for good sleep hygiene, and a new mattress contributes to that.
5. Enhanced durability and comfort
Modern mattresses are designed with advanced materials that can provide superior comfort and durability. The Origin Hybrid Mattress benefits from key features such as:
- 3000+ Individually pocketed Steel springs
- 6 Comfort Layers
- Snow Tencel Pillowtop
- Bamboo-Infused WoolÂ
Origin is award winning when it comes to mattresses with their engineered dual-stage coil system which allows the mattress springs to adjust to their resistance based on the weight of the user, provide tailored pressure relief. Paired with other tailored features, its no wonder I’m getting such a good night sleep and why Origin is award winning.

My favourite part is the motion isolation technology and memory foam material which absorbs the kinetic energy from movements, this has been perfect for my OH who is a light sleeper but also he doesn’t wake me when he gets out of bed at 4.30am for work.
Replacing your old mattress with a newer model means you get access to the latest sleep technology, improving both your sleep quality and long-term health.
How often should you replace your mattress?
The lifespan of a mattress varies depending on factors like the type of mattress, its quality, and how well it’s been maintained. However, a general guideline is to replace your mattress every 7 to 10 years.
A hybrid mattress for example, may have a lifespan of around 8-10 years. Origin warranty is for 15 years, that’s how much confidence they have in their mattress quality.

Signs you need to replace your mattress sooner
While the 7–10 year guideline is a helpful rule of thumb, certain signs indicate you may need to replace your mattress sooner:
Sagging or visible indentations – If your mattress has visible sagging or indentations where you sleep, it’s a sign that the materials have worn down and no longer provide adequate support.
Waking up with pain – Persistent back pain, neck stiffness, or joint pain that doesn’t improve with changes in posture could be a sign that your mattress is no longer providing proper support.
Allergies or asthma flare-ups – If your allergies or asthma have been worsening at night, dust mites, mold, or other allergens trapped in your old mattress could be the culprits.
Excessive noise or squeaking – If you have an innerspring mattress that squeaks or creaks every time you move, it may be losing its structural integrity.
Uncomfortable sleep – If you find yourself tossing and turning more often than usual or can’t seem to get comfortable at night, it’s likely time to consider a new mattress.
How to extend the life of your mattress
While your mattress will eventually need replacing, there are steps you can take to help it last longer:
Use a mattress protector – A mattress protector or topper can keep your mattress safe from spills, dust mites, and allergens, helping to prolong its lifespan. The Origin Contour Mattress Topper was voted mattress topper of the year 2024.
Rotate Regularly – Rotating your mattress every 3 to 6 months helps prevent uneven wear and extends its durability. Origin recommends every 6 months for mattress rotation.
Clean It – Regularly vacuum your mattress to remove dust, dirt, and allergens. Spot-clean stains as soon as they occur to prevent them from setting in.
Avoid jumping or excessive pressure – Overloading your mattress with too much weight (or jumping on it, you, or the kids…!) can cause it to lose its shape prematurely.
Conclusion
Your mattress plays a crucial role in your overall health and well-being.
Replacing it when it starts to lose its supportive properties can dramatically improve your sleep quality, reduce aches and pains, and create a healthier environment for rest. While the average lifespan of a mattress is 7–10 years, always be on the lookout for signs that it may need replacing sooner. Remember, investing in a high-quality mattress isn’t just about comfort — it’s an investment in your health. So, if your mattress is showing signs of wear, it might be time to treat yourself to a better night’s sleep with a fresh, new mattress.
I can highly recommend the Origin Hybrid Mattress, having had the best sleep I’ve had in years, I wake up feeling refreshed, admittedly I don’t want to get out of bed its that comfy, but a girl’s gotta work!
