Reading Time: 4 minutes

I love nothing more than curling up with a good book. And whilst I’m not short on comfy spots to indulge my reading habits, I’ve always lusted after a reading nook. A quiet corner dedicated to books.

Whether it is to create a space for reading, studying or as a quiet escape from the household hustle and bustle, a reading nook doesn’t need to be complicated. It can take advantage of features you may already have in your home, such as a bay window, unused under-stair space, alcove or even space on the landing. It should be a space that promotes tranquillity and peace, it is after all somewhere you go to relax.

Whilst I might lust after a beautifully curated bookshelf of colour co-ordinated books, in reality, I don’t have that kind of space, what I do have though is a comfy chair in the corner by the window. The perfect reading nook could just be a chair in the corner of the room with some cosy blankets and good lighting.

Here are some ways to help you create a space dedicated to some me-time.

Create the perfect reading nook

Think about lighting and colour scheme

Lighting is going to be important for your reading space. Whether it is natural light from a window paired with some soft fairy lights or artificial light created by a floor lamp.

Also, think about the colour, you want soothing calming colours. Whether that is on the walls creating a zone in a larger space or adding a pop of colour through blankets and accessories.

Organising your books by colour will also generate a pop of colour without painting!

Combine with storage – Make it functional

If space is at a premium but you still want your dedicated reading corner, utilise the space and make it as functional as possible. Already have bookshelves or an alcove? Then cleverly use every piece of space available and give every inch a function. A storage box with nice cushions on top makes a nice bench to sit back and chill on.

Make the space multi-functional, but make sure that it is always kept free of clutter and remains a relaxing space.

What about a view

You don’t need a bay window to create an envy-worthy reading nook, but it certainly helps. Building in a window seat with luxurious seat pads and blankets will make this spot perfect for reading.

An area to gaze out the window as you absorb the story, falling rain to aid that feeling of relaxation. Being near a window will also leave you feeling like you are out in nature and we all know how much that helps with our stress levels.

This space will also double up for times when you just want to sit and have some quiet or even to work.

Where to put your reading nook – don’t forget the bedroom!

You may have the space to be able to dedicate a room purely to reading and relaxation, or even a corner of your living room or study. But, don’t forget the bedroom. Our bedrooms are already areas where we tend to relax so why not pop a comfy chair in the corner and create your reading nook here?

The fact it’s near the bed should you begin to drift off is a definite bonus!

Seating and comfort – setting the scene

Seating is going to be incredibly important when it comes to creating your reading nook. There’s a huge variety of options out there from a big sink in snuggle chairs, armchairs, hanging chairs or even a beanbag. A day-bed or futon would easily make an ideal place to lounge and lose yourself in a novel.

Surround yourself with comforting things, furnishings, pictures or artwork, relaxing scents and keep a shelf or table nearby for that cup of tea or hot chocolate! You may even curl up with your pet or loved one too.

Using plants to create a tranquil reading space is also a great idea. This again brings nature close to you for added relaxation.

Take your reading nook outside!

I absolutely adore being able to read outside, sadly I don’t have a garden to do so. But, I do read outside whenever I get the chance if, for example, I’m on holiday or during my lunch break.

If you do have outside space, even a terrace, utilise it and create a sunny day relaxation space.

My dream would be to hang a hammock between two trees and just read and swing amongst nature. (though let’s be honest, I’d probably use up all my energy just trying to get in the damn thing haha!)

Where do you read?

No matter what you decide to do with your reading nook, make sure it gives you that peaceful escape you long for.

  1. Ooooo yes. I’m feeling a little envy already & desperately wanting a house with more space! I’d love a reading nook – like you say, the window seat isn’t necessary, and yet there has always been something so appealing to me about that. Given the problems I have with pain and nerve damage meaning I can’t sit in a chair anymore, I’m quite tempted by the hammock. I’ve absolutely nowhere to put it, but I really want one now 😆 I do find I want super comfort when I read, even if it’s just snuggled up in bed with soft blankets and cushions and a cuppa tea. I love the inspiration here, it’s a good way to really get some zen time and indulge in a good book.

I’m glad I just came across you from another blog – I’m in the Cotswolds too! Started following you here and on social media, so please don’t think I’m stalking you, it’s just that I don’t come across many fellow bloggers from this neck of the woods.

    1. I hope you manage to find somewhere to squeeze in a hammock! My mum has one in the corner of her lounge, it’s on its own stand so no need to have it suspended so it takes up less space!

Haha no worries, I’ve followed you back 😊 always lovely to find other bloggers in the area.
