Modern nomad? Give your caravan some caravoom with these kitchen must-haves

Sponsored article

With the on-going caravan comeback comes a whole new approach – and a whole new attitude – to what we consider ‘essential’ items when hitting the road.

Take the kitchen for example. Puny pans and plastic plates no longer cut the mustard; a quick coffee now means espresso, not instant; and today’s BBQs have all the traits of fought-over family heirlooms. Yet which of these items will truly stand the test of time?

It’s a question worth pondering. So, to help you sort the real finds from the short fads, we’ve put together this useful edit of the kitchen must-haves most likely to earn a place in your ‘top five’.

The pinnacle of pans

For compact cookware, RidgeMonkey’s Granite Edition Pans are a real game changer.

Originally designed for discerning anglers, these durable pans can happily handle the transition from campfire to caravan hob and back again. Plus, the non-stick surface requires less cooking oil and is easy to clean.

“With their gun-metal grey finish, this cookware looks pretty cool and feels it too, thanks to the cool-touch handles. Plus the square shape means much less wasted storage space than with traditional round cookware; ironic for such a great all-rounder“

Certain items in the range also come with a full utensil set that fits neatly inside, saving you even more space when not in use.

The go-to coffee maker

If you can’t leave home without easy access to your espresso or cold-brew, a travel coffee maker, such as the Aeropress Go Travel, is a real boon.

Designed in Silicon Valley and engineered to deliver great-tasting coffee on the go, the Aeropress Go Travel is a smart piece of kit, described by users as ‘ingenious’, ‘brilliant’, and ‘effortless’. And little wonder – all it takes is a single press to deliver one to three cups of delicious coffee.

It even includes a sturdy mug and lid that doubles as a travelling case for extra space-saving efficiency. Plus, despite its many outstanding qualities, it still comes in at a very pocket-friendly price – equivalent to around a dozen London lattes.

The brilliant BBQ

It might not be the cheapest option out there, but if you’re looking for a five-star rated BBQ set-up, the Snow Peak Takibi Fire & Grill takes a lot of beating. And it will attract plenty of envious glances too…

Crafted from durable stainless steel, this claims to be the most well-designed and packable fireplace on the market – and few would argue, given its universally excellent reviews as both grill and fire pit. Cook on it, sleep by it, stand back and admire it; it won’t let you down.

“Weight is always an issue when caravanning, so it’s worth noting this is a heftynumber. But with that heft comes rock-solid stability and durability; so much so that could well end up passing it down to the next generation.”

The holy grail (of plates)

Lightweight unbreakable dinnerware is essential when you’re caravanning. And today, it’s possible to find some more stylish alternatives to those hideous plastic and melamine plates from the time taste forgot.

Among the most attractive are those from Daisy Graze, an Australian company that makes beautiful 100% plant-based dinnerware. Aside from being fully bio-degradable, this range of plates, cups, and cutlery comes in a choice of smart and playful colours, meaning it’s as good for your caravan interior as it is for the wider environment.

Sadly, Daisy Graze does not (yet) ship to the UK so, for now, you can only admire their stylish collection online. However, CSYY has some cool equivalents in complementary ice-cream shades, available through Amazon. Just search ‘CSYY unbreakable plates’.

The happy hour heroes

Finally, no caravanning trip is complete without the right equipment for a satisfying sundowner. (Alcohol optional. Sunset obligatory.)

Here, substance – aka wine or mocktail – takes precedence over style. Just make sure to pack the three essentials to enjoy a first-class tipple – i.e. unbreakable glasses (traditional colourful, or tiki…), a lightweight glasses storage box (plastic or fabric ones work well), and a compact portable ice-maker (great for making iced coffees too).

There are plenty of options available online, so just see what appeals to your taste, matches your budget, and fits comfortably into your caravan.

Plus one added extra you should never be without

Of course, one of the well-chosen items you should always have with you on the road is specialist touring caravan insurance.

While it isn’t a legal requirement, you’ll never regret putting it in place, especially if you’re guaranteed the best deal. At InsureMy we not only find you that deal from a bank of trusted and reputable insurers but also complement it with a rock-solid lowest price guarantee.

  1. We have stainless steel crockery, and it’s brilliant. We’ve had the same set since about 2012 and it’s still as good as new – the kids have even played frisbee with it so I’m convinced it’s indestructible 😆
